An excellent video of the damage caused by the Minie. Be sure to pay attention to the overall cavitation caused by the round. The damage is devastating! When people ask us why were abdominal and chest wounds almost always fatal or why did they do so many amputations this shows the reason. Cavitation is the amount of energy released by the round that impacts surrounding tissue. Looking at the gel you can see that it was beyond extreme so it isnt hard to imagine that a shot near the right lower quadrant of the abdomen would easily cause damage to the intestines, liver, right kidney, bladder. Depending on the range of the shooter you could even see cavitation injures to the diaphragm and the stomach. Same idea with a chest wound..A lot of soft tissue essential to life...heart, lungs, diaphragm and major vessels. This is a big part of why limbs were removed...they had neither the time or the knowledge to spend hours removing fragments of shattered bones and rebuilding vessels and nerves. Best to take the limb and save the patient.
