An excerpt from, To the Rescue, A Passion for Pit Bulls To The Rescue, A Passion For Pit Bulls by Connie Bowman I thought taking my dogs to the dog parks was a responsible thing to do as a Pit Bull owner and a good way to socialize them. I always kept a close eye on my dogs and their body language, careful to avoid any fights, but I noticed that not everybody did the same. It seemed to be social hour for the dog owners as well. One day I took Spot to the dog park and upon entering, two young Pit Bulls tried to double team him so I immediately took him back out and put him in a sit / stay and, keeping an eye on him, I then went to talk to the young Pit Bulls owner. I was very nice and simply asked her to not let her dog’s double team my dog for fear that a fight would entail. She was very snooty and replied, “They are only nine months old, what could they possibly do?” I told her all the more reason to have control of her dogs, usually, around that age, dogs are trying to find their independence. In a snooty way, she said she would watch her dogs. I should’ve known better. I went back to Spot and together, we went back into the park without any trouble. Until we were about midway in, and the same two Pit Bulls double teamed Spot. Fortunately, I was able to back them off and got Spot out of the park while cursing at the owner of the dogs. With Spot on a leash we preceded to just walk on the paths of the park. A few minutes later, the owner of the young Pit Bulls approached me and said, “Your dog made one of my dogs bleed”. I said, “I’m sorry but it’s not my problem, I tried to tell you what potentially could happen?” She then asked me what I was going to do about it, I said, “Nothing” She threw a few choice words at me that I blocked with, “You shouldn’t even have Pit Bulls because you obviously are not responsible enough. You’re just contributing to their already bad reputation”. And with that being said, she then swung on me and the two of us were in a fist fight in the park. I am not trying to toot my own horn, but after the cops were called and witnesses told them the other woman threw the first punch, I told them I didn’t want to press charges and I walked away unscathed. I cannot say the same for her. That was the last time that I took any of my dogs to the dog park.
