An excerpt from my notes for my Sunday school class tomorrow, putting the lesson into practical applications, avoiding the traps and snares of evil thoughts that lead to sin and iniquity. If you are in my class, you have the answers to the questions. :) What is the difference between sin and iniquity? Sin – is the transgression from the law of God; disobedience of the divine command. Thou shalt not…Love thy…Give honor…; moral deficiency in character, failing to do right Iniquity – gross injustice; wickedness; absence of, deviation from acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright, good or right standard. What makes it right? God’s word is the plum line, the standard by which all decisions and judgments must be based. “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear [me]” Psalm 66:18 What is this word “regard?” Regard is to give it consideration; give attention to it; intention; taking the time to contemplate, plan or think on an evil thing. What we take time to think on, forms the intention of the heart. If we think to plot and plan an evil thing, the heart’s intention becomes evil. "How can I get that one back without it being obvious?" This is a self-serving behavior of iniquity in ones heart. 2 Peter 2:14: “…an heart they have exercised with covetous practices” What exercises do you do for your heart? Why doesn’t God hear? Isaiah 59:2: “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear.” • We must put away the very thoughts of devising evil: “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” 2 Cor. 10:5 • We must think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, admirable of God, things that lead to forgiveness, faith, love and hope of good things to come? Think of things to do that are so wonderful that your deeds go up before God as a sweet smelling sacrifice. “I keep under my body, and bring [it] into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” 1 Cor. 9:27 “But I discipline my body and keep it under control,* lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” NIV • “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Heb. 12:1-2
