An exciting new study highlights potential targets to look at therapies for treating specific features of Rett syndrome, using proteins and enzymes that regulate cholesterol. A new publication coming from Italy started on a comparison study of the cells and plasma from Rett patients and healthy donors. Why? To prove that the discovery from Monica Justice’s Lab really does have potential to be translated into humans. The authors concluded that the principle is sound and should be considered. Even though the work highlights changes in the main components of cholesterol maintenance, we still don’t know the molecular mechanisms underlying the differences in cholesterol metabolism between RTT patients and healthy donors. But researchers are making vital progress in identifying therapeutic targets and working towards translating it to clinical knowledge and therapies. #Rettsyndrome #RettResearch
