An illegitimate government can only be abolished by a force more powerful than itself. For this reason, I believe volunteer law enforcement can replace our current police. Volunteer militias have abolished governments before; in Switzerland, in Somalia, in Mexico. This means that they have the potential of being a more effective law enforcement tool than traditional police. But without direct democracy, militias end up becoming mercenaries for their donors. To ensure a legitimate government arises out of a volunteer militia, a majority of residents must voluntarily consent to its rule. But then what prevents Joe Shmoe from murdering somebody in the name of the law? The classical American jury, with consensus democracy as its core value, can pervade in matters of sentencing and in the distribution of justice. #anarchostatism
