An incident reported in a Bombay newspaper in 1970 touched the hearts of the readers. An 18 year old young man was unexpectedly caught in a fire accident. He quickly discarded his shirt. But his tight pants, true to its name tightened around his legs which were badly blistered. He was admitted in the hospital with excruciating pain. Doctors were fighting for his life. One expert said:”Give me the right skin. I will save him”. Friends, relatives, neighbours all looked at each other in bewilderment, but none offered their skin. At that time his beloved mother running. She realized what the doctor needed. Without counting the consequences, she offered her skin that was needed. My life is immaterial; save my son”, she pleaded. The doctor peeled her skin and grafted it to her son. The young man was saved. How unique is a mother’s love! But what has God got to say?” Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.Isaiah 49:15 .That mother agreed to part with her skin for her own son. But the Son of God cheerfully agreed to His body being broken and crushed for “everyone” of His creation, for those who loved Him as well as those who loved Him not. The whip used by the roman soldiers for scourging Jesus was a dreadful one. It parted in to nine cords whose ends were weighed with an iron ball or a piece of bone.Prisoners were thrashed with it to extort their confessions. Each blow would tear in to flesh deeply. As blow after blow fell upon the victim’s mangled flesh, the victims unable to bear the pain-would cough out the truth. Just imagine how the delicate body of innocent Jesus would have trembled beneath those blows! How cruel were our sins that caused such torment in the body of the son of God. The Bible says;”Yet He opened not His mouth…For the transgressions of My people He was stricken”(Isaiah 53:7,8). Through He might not have spoken, could His body bear the torture? Precious blood must have streamed forth. And did they draw the line there, these stone hearted men? They placed a crown of thorns on His head, and hit it hard with their clubs. As the thorns pierced deeper and deeper, streams of blood would have poured all over His body. Friends ! You may be desperately wandering without jobs, with no means of living. Fix your eyes on Jesus who bled on the streets of Jerusalem. Beloved sisters in tears, cast away by your husband and walking wearily to your parents, look up to Jesus who walks ahead of you with bleeding fleet. He will give you Shelter. And you brother, who is walking so fast with tear-stained eyes, resolved to commit suicide, halt ! Wipe your eyes a little and look ahead. See Jesus, the Son of the carpenter of Nazareth, carrying the cruel cross, bleeding all the way. He will cheerfully carry your cross as well. Fellow messengers of Christ! Are you frustrated that your efforts to sow the seeds of the gospel, street by street has been fruitless? Faint not ! You have cast the seeds of the Gospel not on barren streets, but along streets enriched by the blood of Christ. You will see the yield at the appointed time.Be patient until then. And you childless sister, scorned by your husband and others ! Look ahead at the bleeding Jesus. Didn’t He tear open the Virgin’s womb to be born there? He can do such a miracle for you. Seek shelter at His feet. Yes, the precious blood of Jesus flooded the streets of Jerusalem as a life stream for sinners and destitute. Beloved in Christ ! Commit your life to Him. Let His Precious blood cleanse your ways, assuring you life, peace, joy.Be of Good Courage !!!! Another reason for the wounds over the body of Jesus was that He offered to carry our sins causing “wounds with out cause” and received on His body wounds which should be ours. His wounds and scars were meant to heal our souls. The Bible describes Jesus as “altogether lovely” but when He was hanging on the cross,:”He has no form or comeliness and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him “(Isaiah 53:2). Yes ! To deliver us from all evil habits, to ward off” wounds with out cause” the body of Jesus was wounded all over. Do you complain that you have no mastery over some vice, some evil habit? It was to liberate you that the body of Jesus was wounded. He submitted Himself to be broken that you may not be wounded. Fall at His feet, and pray for your release from sin. He will have compassion on you and deliver you. Don’t we have the promise of our Saviour”So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36)
