Overheard a couple of people, not sure if they are relief workers or survivors, who was talking not just about the physical havoc but also of the emotional damage on the kids that they saw. That got me to thinking that perhaps aside from the basic necessities - thats a given - we can also include something for the kids, perhaps the most basic of all toys (no use for electronic or battery-operated toys here). Something as simple as balloons that they can blow up, or even those that go inside a pinata. I have been observing streeet children and have found that even the cap of a peanut butter jar brings them joy, since they can roll it and pretend its a car on wheels. This is a challenge for us too, to see things through the eyes of a child. The kids are donating all their picture books and stuffed toys for Anthony Jumamoy Ilano to take to the north this weekend.
