An initiative to help address the impacts of climate change on migration in the Pacific has been launched in Suva. The joint initiative was launched by UN ESCAP, ILO and the UNDP at a meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community at the Vale Ni Bose House in Nasese. The head of UN ESCAP Pacific, Iosefa Maiava says the project will assist all Pacific islands particularly Tuvalu, Kiribati and Nauru to build resilience as part of their climate change adaptation. “I think what’s happened in the case of Fiji is a bilateral deal between the government of Kiribati and Fiji where the land has being secured to help the people of Kiribati, not necessarily in terms of moving or migrating. I think the President of Kiribati has made that very clear. That’s not necessarily the situation; I think the focus is to look at farming that land to help provide for food for people in Kiribati.” The initiative is funded by the European Union.
