An interesting perspective from Mr. Byrne. Having lived in NY for a bit of time and having visited sometimes two or three times a year I have to agree. There is a vitality missing. I miss the days of the creaking wooden gallery floor. The narrow uneven staircase leading to a bright white space full of amazing work. I miss dirt in SOHO. I miss the junkies, the texture and the occasional body laying on the sidewalk. Galleries would be right next to a meat market (all kinds of meat)! There was energy, risk and adventure. It began in Times Square. The sanitation and Disneyfication of a rich, raw place. It spread to SOHO, the East Village, Williamsburg, Chelsea....art has followed the trend. Not in RACA. I just saw a junkie crawling out of a stripped car in the field next to the Poor Farm. ;) Space is still cheap here. You can see the stars (not the kind on the streets), you can see the horizon line or maybe mountains. Art is still possible here. We even have the nobility of not making much money! Or perhaps we have the privilege of providing art to regular people. I like that.
