365 days of music you need to know...Day 25/365 - TopicsExpress

365 days of music you need to know...Day 25/365 (Sunday) Somewhat keeping with the theme from Saturday, here is another Tegan and Sara song, this time performed by Alkaline Trio with Tegan Quin for a live video podcast in LA. The song, Wake Up Exhausted, was written by Quin. The guys in Alkaline Trio really dug the power of the song and felt the melancholic feeling of it made it the perfect choice for the b-side of their 2008 single, Help Me. (Side note: Help Me was inspired by the Joy Division biopic Control, and the artwork for the 7-inch was inspired by the original art for Joy Divisions single Love Will Tear Us Apart.) The version Alkaline Trio recorded for the single was brilliant, injecting all their patented piss and vinegar into an already beautiful song, but this live version is something altogether different. Dan Andriano did the vocals on the cover, but in this live version he also switched to guitar, creating not only a great visual element, but a true sonic cohesion through the side-by-side playing of him and Tegan, along with their vocal harmonizing - his muted punk voice juxtaposed against her soaring high-end register. The backbone of Skiba on bass and background vocals and Detroits own Derek Grant on drums drives the song forward, tearing at your heartstrings the whole way. Songs about heartache and longing dont normally sound so bright and hopeful. I normally take this song a bit more literally, as damn near every morning I truly do Wake Up Exhausted...just like today. Enjoy this video and I strongly encourage you to check out the Alkaline Trio solo version as well. https://youtube/watch?v=bqcJLACfkXU
