An oasis in an otherwise ho-hum section of todays Hollywood, the Villa Elaine Apartments at 1245 Vine Street (b/w Fountain and La Mirada) was built in 1925 as St. George Court. As Christopher Riordan and I discovered on separate occasions, the rather imposing 4 story brick building conceals a lush open courtyard just inside the (usually locked) gates that blocks out the traffic on Vine and transports you back to a quieter era. Apartments appear to be townhouse-style. Alumni residents are a loyal bunch: I found a website and a Facebook page. Some of the better known tenants of the VE (it was renamed in the 40s) include photographer Man Ray, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles, Ruth Warrick, Marjorie Rambeau, James Darren and the band Remy Zero, who named an album after this well-loved and history-rich address.
