An odd thing happened this week in telecom policy - the public - TopicsExpress

An odd thing happened this week in telecom policy - the public reacted, perhaps a bit prematurely, to rumors of a shift in FCC position regarding Net Neutrality - a bedrock policy that middle-men (Internet Service Providers) shouldnt discriminate based on content in transmission; Im confident the FCC will move forward to support the Presidents very clear position on this matter (as Chairman Wheeler has already stated). But the odd part is the relative muted reaction to what could be the most economically impactful, bold, and innovative decision the FCC made on that very day the rumors hit - to propose a new Innovation Band of spectrum, a large swath (150 MHz) available for private commercial use, as well as open/public use (unlicensed) in collaboration with government agencies who reserve first rights on the valuable airwaves. Breakthrough technologies are maturing to offer dynamic access in smaller areas which means the public can get online faster, cheaper, and more reliably without breaking the bank. Take a look at the proposed rule and share any feedback on what could very well be the next chapter in broadband access policy. Im a big fan :).
