An old preacher told an old story of a woman who came for help on a gray windy day. The lady was contrite for passing on a tiny malicious tale. The gossip, because it was delicious, spread and grew across the community. She begged the preacher for a solution. The old man silently retreated to the back of the parsonage and returned with a feather pillow. He ripped open one end and gave it to the lady; “Carry this outside, shake every last feather into the wind”. Confused but obedient she followed his instructions and returned holding the limp, hollow pillow case. Staring firmly in her eyes, the man of wisdom said; “Come back tomorrow, collect the feathers”. Did you believe the whispered story? Did you pass on what you did not know? Did you savor it and share it to damage the others? With practice, the specialized art of the whisper campaign can be mastered. Unsuspecting participants accomplish the desired destruction and the initiator remains in the shadows.
