An open letter from our President (Alicia Duval) --- DARE get - TopicsExpress

An open letter from our President (Alicia Duval) --- DARE get emails - lots of them all about various things but none the less we get more than the average person...and most of them make us sad, angry or hopeful that we can help. We get questions, lots of questions. So I would like to be perfectly clear about one thing: The ONLY thing we care about is saving dachshunds who need someone to save them. (and sometimes saving them is just educating their current owner) Yes - We get requests every day from shelters, owners who need to surrender their dogs, Good Samaritans who find dogs & vets office etc... But we can only save as many dogs as we can properly care for. Death row dogs will always receive top priority! As a legitimate rescue we can not try to take in every single dog that needs rescue or we will go bankrupt and stop functioning all together or worse become so over run with dogs with no way to care for them all. We do evaluate each dogs situation prior to coming into our rescue because anything other than that is just irresponsible. DARE is self sustaining as a result of both money raised with fundraisers/donations and available foster homes. (Yes that is why we fund-raise 24/7/365) and everyday we all tell ourselves We can only do what we can do. We save the ones we can save, and for those we makes a difference In return for all that we do we have one simple request when your dealing with us (or any rescue). DONT LIE TO US (or the shelters) We have heard and seen it all. (Unfortunately) We have to know the facts to determine if we can effectively help. We are really not interested in you or your spin on a situation. Just the facts and just the dog. If we can help - we will. If we cant - we try to provide resources for others who might be able to. Our volunteers treat each person who interacts with us with honesty, dignity and respect and we expect the same from you in return. I have personally hugged an owner who is surrendering their dog (for a variety of reasons) and wiped away their tears because what they were doing was hard on them - even though it was the best thing for the dog. I have rescued dogs from death row (mostly because their owners dumped them at a shelter) and I have helped to rescue dogs who were found as strays, lost, scared and confused and not once - not one time did any dog ever lie to me. Humans have a responsibility to properly care for the animals that we take into our lives and homes but if at some point you can not care for that animal you deserve to tell the truth about it. The truth may set it free & keep it alive. Dogs die in shelters every day... Dont say your dog was a stray when its not Dont say it doesnt bite when it does Dont say its laid back when its not Dont say it has bitten when it has not. Dont say its housebroken when it isnt Dont say it likes cats when it doesnt Dont say its good with kids/other dogs if its not. -Just Dont lie- Dont try to ease your conscious by telling anything other than the truth. We CAN handle the truth...and knowing the true story behind any incoming dog in rescue can sometimes be the deciding factor... We gamble each time we rescue a dog, we never know if the dog we are rescuing is going to be aggressive, cost a fortune in medical bills, hate other dogs, cats or kids or be a total love who just needs a safe place to stay until they find their forever family... We dont have a shelter - we are run out of foster homes. That means people just like you and me (yea us rescuers dont really have superpowers) open their homes up to dogs in need. DARE tries very hard to set each foster home up for success - not failure. (So that means we ask a lot of nosy questions) But we can only ensure success when we know the truth about what kind of dog we are dealing with and even then we can only do what we can do.... Being a foster home is such a rewarding experience (and sometimes scary) but we are with you every step of the way. We cover all the vetting, you supply all the love. If you think you have what it takes (and you live in Florida) visit our website today and fill out a foster home application. Remember - We are all volunteers doing - ya know...important rescue stuff and trying to have a life and a job and a family too...so be patient with us... It might take a few days to get back to you. In the mean time consider setting up a monthly donation for DARE ($5, $10, $20 etc ) & talking to people you know about rescue while educating them on responsible pet ownership. DAREs mission is about rescuing & making a difference for the doxies who need us and that is what keeps is going and going and going.... DARE celebrated our 10 year anniversary this year - thats 10 years of making a difference!
