An open letter to law enforcement: As we celebrate this holiday - TopicsExpress

An open letter to law enforcement: As we celebrate this holiday season with family and friends, thank you for the sacrifices you AND your families make every day to keep our communities safe. Speaking as a citizen of this community and a husband and father of four sons, rather than a member of Congress, the tragic events of the past week have caused me to pause and reflect on the awesome responsibility that is yours. The shocking deaths of our very own Tarpon Springs Police Officer Charlie K Kondek and of NYPD Officers Liu and Ramos illustrate that there is no such thing as a typical day for law enforcement officers. You face significant challenges in your minute to minute decision-making. You know all too well that, on average, an officer dies in the line of duty every 58 hours - thats 150 deaths per year! Often police officers are left with a split second to make a life-or-death decision - a scenario in which very few of us can relate. For you, routine traffic stops or calls are non-existent. We are blessed to have the best trained and most professional law enforcement officers in the world. For your tremendous sacrifices and countless acts of courage, my family and I express our deepest gratitude to you and your families. Thank you for allowing me to spend the holidays in comfort and security with my family because of your willingness to serve and protect. Many of you have to forgo holiday celebrations and life events because youre on the job keeping the streets safe for the rest of us. But, for some, like Officer Charlie K, who failed to answer his dispatcher s last call today before he was laid to his final rest, they are finally done walking the beat and deserve eternal peace in a place where they no longer have to contend with pain or sorrow. To the ones who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to all of you who are still answering the call of duty, I say THANK YOU and God bless. I will always have your back. Much repsect- Gus
