An open letter to my UUCB and CEO Space Community. I was interviewed a few months ago by Dr. Kelly Turner for her new book, Radical Remissions. The book was released on March 18 and is a possible candidate for the New York Times bestseller list. I was privileged to get an early copy and in reading it I’m impressed with how good a book it is. Reading it has given me another chance to reflect on my own dance with cancer and it has renewed my very deep gratitude to you, for your help in my healing! I would not be here if you hadn’t stepped up to help! The church was SO instrumental in my being able to heal! Your support opened up my eyes to the love that surrounds me and taught me the great lesson that every human is loved because they exist. I learned I was not special because I was me, but because I existed. All life is special and as such has intrinsic value. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for that lesson! Your support gave me the space and time to let my body do its job. I did not have to worry about where I was going to live, what I was going to eat, or how I was going to get treatment, YOU made all those things possible for me. Thank you! You were a perfect expression of our UU principles and a living example of how we should be, in community. So many people helped! I have six pages of names and I‘m so grateful to everyone! It’s been nine years. Some who helped have died, others moved on and we’ve lost touch, but many more are still in my life and I’m so blessed to have you! No person is an island, but we are raised, in this country, to think we can do it by ourselves, we can’t. We need each other in ways too numerous to mention. I am here because of community, because of you – thank you, thank you, thank you! Warmly, Kathryn
