An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Part 2. What I was able to do after removal of the bent over rusty ingrown nail. The frog was squishy and the hoof felt partially hollow. Black rot oozed from the nail wound and I had to remove enough of the overgrown bar and sole to open up the wound. When I touched the other side of the frog grown onto the heal bulbs and wall it was squishy and rotting, it bled as soon as I cut into it so I left it to drain. I trimmed some of the excess wall and forward grown heels and rasped the toe to allow some breakover. There is still lots of excess hoof but I felt that it needed to be left and trimmed a little at a time. First some heing needs to take place. The horse was unable to pick up his other front even for a cleaning and even with arnica. :( I was only able to do a partial speedy cleaning on the hinds. Poor buddy was in too much pain. He was able to walk somewhat better and put a little weight on the foot afterward. The woman caring for him is going to continue washing soaking and treating him daily with updates to me. I will try to go back in 2 weeks. Id feel better about his progress if I could have hands on daily. Unfortunately hes 4 hrs away. :( I trust his caregiver will do her utmost.
