All elephants in Thailand go through this, this is how elephants are trained its called breaking their spirit. Other countries do something similar. I spent last week volunteering at Elephant Nature Park in Thailand which is a sanctuary for retired & injured elephants & some of them were in an awful state for various reasons, mainly because of tourism, illegal logging & forced breeding - because tourists love to see a baby elephant! Some were blind, some had broken backs & legs, some have mental issues due to the abuse they have endured & some have been given amphetamines so they can trek longer. Elephants are not here to carry you on their backs for hours per day, to paint you a picture or to perform for you, they are wild animals. If you want to spend some time with elephants in an abuse free environment, visit the Elephant Nature Park for a day, overnight or even a week or 2.
