An own goal is when a team member accidentally scores a goal for the opposing side against his own team. Andres Escobar, a Columbian defender, scored an own goal that ultimately contributed to a 2-1 loss to the United States and (Columbia’s) elimination from the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Escobar apparently became a scapegoat for Columbia’s defeat and his own goal is believed by many to be the motive for his murder just ten days later (aged just 27). (Source: Wikipedia) From watching the replay it appears Escobar tried unsuccessfully to deflect a shot by an opponent away his team’s net but it had just the opposite effect. It appears if the shot would miss until Escobar put his foot to it and sent it right past his own goalie into the net! I doubt that Escobar went on the field that day with the intention of scoring the own goal, though perhaps it is possible. Scripture shows us that Judas had lust for money in his heart long before he betrayed his Master for 30 pieces of silver. That own goal ultimately cost him his life. It was the same with Cain, King Saul and so many others. Even Moses scored an own goal when he struck the rock instead of speaking to it as instructed by God. That own goal kept him out of the promised land. I doubt that any of us would intentionally score an “own goal” in our walk with the Lord, yet that is what so many people do. What actions do you take that could lead you to a spiritual own goal against the Lord’s team and to score a goal for the enemy of your soul?
