An update from Ellen Broude and the Temple Board went out this - TopicsExpress

An update from Ellen Broude and the Temple Board went out this morning via email, sharing more details about the Rabbis treatment and all that is to come this Fall. We have included the note here to ensure everyone in our community is connected — please read on to learn more. Dear Temple Beth Shalom Members, Im writing to bring you an update on Rabbi Schecters medical condition. Im pleased to report that further testing has confirmed that the cancer has not spread beyond his esophagus and a treatment plan has been put in place. Beginning in the next week or two he will start a 5 week course of combination chemotherapy and radiation treatment followed by 6-8 weeks to refuel before surgery in mid-to-late October. Post-surgery the Rabbi will take a leave of absence for 4-6 weeks to recover. Of course any of this can change at any time for any reason. But the doctors are optimistic about the Rabbis recovery and he tells me they are even using the word cure in the not too distant future. The doctors also have high hopes about the Rabbis ability to function through treatment and he plans to continue working as much as he is able, to conduct services with Cantor Robin, and to attend/officiate at life cycle events as often as possible. He will be in personal contact with individual families who have upcoming wedding and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs scheduled through this period and Cantor Robin is prepared to officiate solo or with the Rabbi at all of these events. Our High Holiday schedule will remain unchanged this year, despite the fact that the Rabbi will not be on the bimah. Along with Cantor Robin we are so lucky to be led by several of the learned, insightful and talented members already within our Congregation. I am sure that this years services will be even more beautiful and meaningful than ever and I thank those of you who will be called upon to participate. The Rabbi does hope to attend and share the holidays with us, and asks that if you catch him napping in the second row that you give him a gentle nudge in the ribs. Or Ill do it for you. Just let me know. As he has been saying these past few days, hes going into his cancer in the best possible health. He is still running and playing tennis, he is strong, and his outlook is sunny and optimistic. The Rabbi also wanted you to know that hell be conducting services this Friday night, so come, ask him questions directly if you have any (hell be doing a Q&A during his remarks), and hear a story or two. If you plan to attend, but dont usually, just let the Temple office know so they can adjust the cookie order! I will continue to send out updates when there is more to share. Until then, call the Rabbi as you always would if you need him, know that the Temple staff under Judys leadership is planning another exciting schedule of programming for the year ahead, and that the Board of Trustees is working hand in hand with both of them. If you have any questions for me directly feel free to call. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
