An update from Joel Nyenhuis: While many of us are frustrated by the progress of the the horse arena, please understand that Cutting Edge Excavating and all the other great companies that have DONATED time and material want to get this project done as well. Mother Nature has not been our friend. I was down at the fairgrounds and they are working on finishing the clay base today. Tomorrow, weather permitting, they will finish with the footing. I also need to provide a little more information so everyone understands why it is taking longer than normal. When we first had the excavator out we found that arena had no base to it, this is what allowed the footing to become so un-level and mixed. With consultation with the excavator it was decided that we would grade the arena so it would drain east towards the river. This involved moving a foot of soil from the east side to the west. After that, a 6 inch base of clay is being added to provide a good base to drain. After that they will be adding a layer of washed sand to provide excellent footing. While this sounds simple, working with clay when it is wet is not easy, however Cutting Edge has been doing an awesome job. Some people have expressed concern in terms of what will happen if we have another flood before fair or in the future. While there is no way to avoid that, by taking more time and getting an adequate base laid down, future repairs tot he arena will not involve as near as much work. While we could have simply dumped more footing on top of what was there and had the arena ready in a very short order, this would not have provided us with the longer term solution that we are having completed now. Please remember we are getting a longer term solution just about totally donated to us and that EVERYONE is doing the best we can with what Mother Nature has been throwing at us! Thanks!
