An update on the “mystery virus” The Ohio Department of Agriculture has determined that at least one of the dogs affected tested positive for circovirus. This is a virus common in birds and until now the only mammals known to carry it were pigs. However, this is not the first time that a virus has mutated to infect a new host. Due to the limited number of cases it is unclear exactly which dogs are most susceptible, how it is most commonly transmitted, etc. What we do know is that the symptoms are severe including, vasculitis (inflammation and destruction of the body’s blood vessels), bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy. The lethargy is very severe. Affected dogs will not want to play and may not even be able to walk due to weakness. There have been less than a handful of reported cases so there is no reason to panic. However, if your pet is showing any of these symptoms take them immediately to an emergency hospital as this disease is absolutely life threatening.
