Anand Bakshi saab moved with the times... Now, recall, the great literary writer, Munshi Premchand, was one of the founding members of the Progressive Writers Movement in 1936? He was born on July 31, 1880 -- precisely 50 years before Anand Bakshi saab (July 21 1930). The author of Godaan always criticized static trends in literature; through his writings he would strive for dynamic social change. He believed that literature is a reflection of its time. What survives are only those emotions and sentiments which stir the heart. During poor socio-economic times, theres a tendency among writers to dwell either on ashiqui or bairag. If literature reflects only such sentiments, then surely its quality will also decline? To arrest such a decline in literature, Munshi Premchand was forever committed to dynamic transformation. A somewhat difficult concept? But literature is never what you understand from superficial reading, right? Good saahitya is always multi-layered. Now, reverting to Anand Bakshi saab, wouldnt you agree that through the medium of Cinema (which is often accused as being the CAUSE for societal changes, but in reality it REFLECTS the societal changes), Bakshi ji always stirred the hearts of jantaa - the regular person on the street? How, why? Through his lyrics he voiced their emotions, their everyday sentiments; and his lyrics over 45 years reflected the changes in society. All the way from the post independence era, to current day cyber-age, contemporary era. He moved with the times... but his lyrics are filled with hope (not despair), and if this is not literature, what is?
