Anatomy of the Multan Stampede Disaster:- This Video helps understand what happened and why? This Qasim Bagh Stadium, is an Amphitheater like a typical Cricket Stadium; in video you can see people descending down the multiple levels towards the gate which is at the bottom end. Unfortunately Gate is closed, so people stand behind each other waiting for the gate to be opened; this creates extreme humidity and suffocation and when gate opens or is pushed open, perhaps not fully, people try to rush out but there is a huge crowd outside on the road as well. Street lights are off, Police and Fire Brigade use water cannons to disperse crowds which adds to the panic. This apparently is a disaster borne out of miscommunication between PTI and District Administration and mismanagement on the part of both. Given the size of crowds this stadium was not the right place for this kind of congregation, this huge ocean of humanity packed like lemmings against each other, needed an Open Ground like all other places - like Lahore and Karachi events - District Administration should have taken the lead in thinking on management challenges: Stadium and Street Lights should have been provided; all Exit Gates should have opened at the end of Jalsa; protocols and SOPs of exit of this huge crowd through narrow gates should have been developed and explained. At this venue, this kind of stampede should have been expected. In last nights program we explained how all major stampedes in the world have taken place at Sporting Events, (Europe)Religious Congregations, (India and Saudi Arabia) Music Events and Political Rallies and Protests (Iraq & other places) - Pakistani crowds have generally escaped big stampedes, and yesterday was not a public fault; apparently mismanagement had created an atmosphere in which this tragedy took place. We will find out more in the next few hours.
