Ancient Word Study The Sacred Name of God – יהוה – YHVH By brother dino The Sacred name of Eloheim (God) was first uttered by Eloheim (God) to Moses in Exodus Chapter Three. As it is written: 13And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. 15And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. (Exodus 3:13-15 KJV) It is found in The Tanakh (aka Old Testament) over 6,800 times as The Tetragrammaton YHVH. The Name of Eloheim (God) is so sacred, it is known throughout the world as The Ineffable (Unutterable) Name of The Eloheim (God) of Israel and whenever Jews refer to Eloheim (God) by name, they replace it with HaShem (The Name) in reverent fear of blasphemy. Long ago the Jews feared blaspheming Eloheim’s (God’s) Holy name, so much so that in ancient times it was only spoken 10 times, once per year, during Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and only by The Kohen Gadol (High Priest), who would also go behind The Veil into The Holy of Holies before the very presence of El Shaddai (God Almighty), so you can imagine his personal level of consecration that year in preparation for the event! Because of this reverent fear of The Lord the correct pronunciation was lost over the centuries and sadly, this has become a divisive point of contention among Jews, Messianic Believers and Christians. However, it is often rendered in English as Yahweh with a pronunciation of YAH’-way, Yahveh with a pronunciation of YAH’-vay, Yahuwah, with pronunciations of YAH’-wah, YAH’-oo-wah, YAH’-Hoo-Wah, and finally, Yahoveh and Jehovah with a pronunciation of YAH’-o-va and typically mispronounced as Gee’-hova because the “J” originally had the sound of “Y” and everyone knows from the Psalms His name begins with YAH which is a shortened version used a few times in scripture. But we must keep in mind that there is no “W” sound in the Hebrew Language. As the Kohanim (Priests) would bless the Israelites they would hold their hands up in the air forward with palms facing out over the congregation as shown in the image. Please note that at the bottom of the hands of the image I selected, the two letters on each hand combine to form יהוה (YHVH), the name of God. Each of the letters in Hebrew has its own special meaning and the literal meaning of each of the 4 letters is: Y - Yod = Hand H - Heh = Behold/look at V - Vav = Nail H - Heh = Behold/look at… so the 4 letters reading right to left as Hebrew is read are… “Look at/Behold the nail, look at/behold the hand” And this of course, points to Y’Shua (Jesus) The Son of God and His precious blood shed on the cross!
