And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. -- Gen 3:15; 1John 3:8 After they had sinned, Adam and Eve clothed themselves in fig leaf aprons of their own making. People have been doing this ever since because one of the results of the fall was, first of all, shame at their nakedness. Man retains the element of shame because of his sin, and he tries to cover himself up. In this case, the fig leaves of his own self-righteousness, his own piety, morality, church going, commandment keeping, benevolence, or whatever it is; they are all fig leaves, and they will not cover his shame and nakedness. We then read that God made a coat of skins and covered man with them--an adumbration of the great covering that God would provide in His own Son, the Lamb of God, who would be slain and rise again to clothe us with the white robes of His own perfect righteousness. Through Christ, we can be given a new nature--a nature that does, indeed, love God and love our neighbor, a nature that desires to do good unto mankind. It is through the power of the Gospel and the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit that there is any hope for any of us, for this nation, and for this world. It is a glorious hope, and it is a hope that is promised and foreshadowed for us right there in the third chapter of Genesis. -- The Real Messiah Prophecies Fulfilled, D. James Kennedy, PH.D. and Jerry Newcombe, D. Min., p. 76, 77.
