And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini Having read Kite - TopicsExpress

And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini Having read Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, both absolute triumphs by Hosseine, I was reluctant to read his latest, And The Mountains Echoed, as felt a hat trick may be asking too much. But by the end of the first sentence I was completely hooked and drawn in. I was in Afghanistan; I felt the rawness, smelt the food, felt the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on my back...Hosseini has the ability to transform you to the very spot. He is a true story teller, and this is an epic story spanning 60 years of lives intertwined, giving an insight into the politics of the day and how it affected the lives of real people. Theres a general feeling that life is cheap, but the deep rooted family ties hold firm throughout, despite the travesties that befall many of the characters. Although this was not as polished as Kite Runner (in my opinion), it was a good, quick read, and I highly recommend it if you want to be transported to the distant lands of Afghanistan, Greece and France - yes, all those places! The ending was a tad predictable, and very emotional - I wept! So have the tissues ready! Hosseinis writing is formulaic, but I dont mind that because it works well. It is unmistakably his own style.
