“And We Exist Because?” Revelation 4: ll 11 "Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power ; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created." Before these words are uttered, John the revelator is treated an incredible sight. He sees the throne of God in all of its splendor, hears the sound of the worshipping twenty-four elders and the heavenly creatures, and then hears for the first time what worship in heaven sounds like. Before I get to verse 11, let me make a few comments about genuine worship. True worship always has at least two components. There is the both a vertical and horizontal aspect to it. The vertical aspect always ascends to give glory and honor to God, to the Lamb and to the Spirit. It is full of exaltation, adoration, and praise for who God is and what He has done. Vertical worship ushers in the presence of God in our lives both individually and corporately. All worship begins here. Horizontal worship relates more to you and me and the acts of love and mercy that God has displayed in our lives. And these songs of worship declare what He has done in our lives and in the lives of all the saints of the past. This is often characterized by the Psalms that rehearse God’s acts on behalf of His people. But this too is an essential part of genuine worship Now back to verse 11. This verse is centered in the Father’s wondrous creativeness. He alone is the creator of everything that was, is, or ever will be. But look at the last part of this verse: “and because of Your will they existed, and were created." All scripture was meant to give us insight, and also to have a practical application. You and I, and everything exist because of the will of God. Your very existence and presence on this planet is a testimony to the will of God. We are here, alive and enjoying all the benefits of His creation, because it is His will! You and I are not an accident looking for a place to happen. We are here to declare His love and mercy, to bless others, and to exalt in the Christ. The Holy Spirit is given to us to guide us and leads into carrying the will of Him who made us. Now that is what I call having a true sense of purpose. He also gives us His word to discover what His will might be and to share in understanding why He made us. Every day is a gift from the Father to you and me so we might honor His will in creating us. Let me share one of my favorite verses. It is Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” In a way, God is declaring that we are a “piece of work”, but a work created with a specific purpose, and that work is doing good deeds that testify to the One who has made us. And this verse also implies that these works are daily available for us to do. So then you who exist because of God’s will, you glorious “piece of work”, live out today bringing honor and glory to Him.
