We need the present continuous tense because the contexts shows that the action is taking place at the moment of speaking I am trying... However, there is another catch that I thought would confuse you. The audience is or the audience are? In British English, we assume that the audience (as well as similar entities) is composed of many people and, if we need to use a pronoun, it would be they. In contrast, referring to it as it would be perfectly correct in American English.
