Dame Frances Margaret Farrer (1895–1977), public servant, General Secretary of the National Federation of Womens Institutes for 30 years, including all of World war II. Within a week of the outbreak of hostilities Farrer ordered 430 tons of sugar, at a cost of £13,000, for an ad hoc country-wide jam-making project, in response to complaints from WI presidents that fruit in abandoned gardens would go to waste. Three months later it was reported that 1740 tons of fruit that otherwise would have perished had been preserved, pickled, and bottled. Blithe Bonnie, I thought of you!
