The alarm has sounded about the level of pollution getting worse in many countries and that this is mainly caused by industry. Many people believe that putting higher taxes on industrial companies which cause this type of pollution would be the best solution while others argue that there are more effective methods to reduce it. In my opinion, I believe that the combination of the two methods is actually the preferred solution. On the one hand, taxing companies may lead to the avoidance of dumping waste in the environment. Because companies operate to make a profit they do not want to pay extra tax, therefore they may restrict the levels of pollution as much as possible. However, there are reasons why this tax might be ineffective. In order to maintain profits, some companies hire clever accountants and lawyers who are legally able to help them avoid paying the tax. Furthermore, if the company cannot avoid the tax, they will probably lower the quality of the products or increase prices to protect profits. On the other hand, there are a variety of solutions that could be used to tackle the problems instead. Firstly, government subsidies provided for eco-friendly processes may be appropriate. Low-interest loans could be provided for that specific purpose to encourage companies to take care of the environment. Furthermore, education is also essential for the directors and managers in order to help them understand more about the role of their company in damaging the environment. When they know the ill-effects they may avoid causing pollution. In conclusion, the combination of increased taxes, education and economic support would be the best way to tackle the problem. If government could manage the company behaviour in this way, their processes are more likely to be changed.
