And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also. Alma 42:15 The Messiah came to redeem men from the Fall of Adam. (See 2 Nephi 2:25-26.) Everything in the gospel of Jesus Christ points toward the atoning sacrifice of the Messiah, the Son of God. (See Alma 34:14.) The plan of salvation could not be brought about without an atonement. Therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also. (Alma 42:15.) The atoning sacrifice had to be carried out by the sinless Son of God, for fallen man could not atone for his own sins. (See Alma 34:11.) The Atonement had to be infinite and eternal?to cover all men throughout all eternity. (See Alma 34:10.) Through His suffering and death, the Savior atoned for the sins of all men. (See Alma 22:14.) His Atonement began in Gethsemane and continued on the cross and culminated with the Resurrection. C. Scott Grow lds.org/general-conference/2011/04/the-miracle-of-the-atonement?lang=eng
