“And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, - TopicsExpress

“And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2nd Timothy 3:15) Being the younger of two sons, when I was young, sometimes I had hand-me-downs. Occasionally, I would get some clothes and coats that belonged to my older brother if he hadn’t already got the good out of them. Those kinds of hand-me-downs aren’t a bad thing, but we have a type of hand-me-down that is worth more than the whole world we live in, and that hand-me-down is faith and understandings about Jesus and the Holy Bible. That are the kind of hand-me-down we all need. Paul, in the second letter to his friend, Timothy, makes much of the hand-me-downs he received. He starts with, “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also” (2nd Timothy 1:5). Here, we see the great impact that Lois and Eunice had on him. In our verse of study, the Bible says that Timothy, “from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures.” It is not much of a conclusion to jump to know that had to have come from his mother and grandmother teaching Him the Scriptures and the things about Jesus. Praise God for every parent and grandparent that will teach their children and grandkids about Jesus! In fact, when they are doing that, they are being obedient to God. The Bible says, “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). Therefore, the Word of God must be taught to the next generation at all times. The best thing we can hand down to the next generation is knowledge of Jesus! Just as it is the responsibility of the older generation to hand down their faith and understanding of Jesus, it is the younger generation’s responsibility to continue in it. Notice the context of our verse of study; the Bible says, “But CONTINUE thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2nd Timothy 3:14-15; emphasis mine). If the effort of teaching is to mean anything, we must build our lives upon the solid truths of the word of God. We must help the next generation to build their lives on God’s word and show them how to share the faith within the family. I pray that every person reading this is blessed by God to remember and continue in the faith of all of those who have taught us the word, and I pray that the next generation will learn from us how good living for Jesus is! Let us all remember that Bible says, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:11-12). Let us have confidence that the word of the LORD will not be void when it is spoken, and let us have joy and peace knowing God will do it!
