And the award for stating the obvious goes to.... : Laws that govern Britain’s intelligence agencies need to be reviewed considering the recent revelations, head of the UK spy watchdog admits. Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who chairs the parliamentary intelligence and security committee (ISC) said, “It must be right for that law to be reviewed from time to time to see whether the safeguards are adequate. Sometimes they are not”. He admitted that the National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden raised “real issues” over the policies of the country’s eavesdropping agency, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) which is responsible to safeguard privacy in Britain. Rifkind confessed that MI5, MI6 and GCHQ services were “not perfect”, adding that there is no justification to obtain intelligence that results in a “diminution in privacy”. Classified documents leaked by Snowden in June revealed that the GCHQ was secretly accessing the network of cables, which carry the world’s phone calls and internet traffic and has been sharing the data with its American counterpart the NSA. According to The Guardian, the GCHQ operation, codenamed Tempora, has been running for the past 18 months.
