And we are now 24 jars of homemade chicken scrap dog food richer. If you are interested it is very easy to make, the dogs LOVE it, and it is very healthy for them. Far better than anything you will buy at the store. But our’s is more of a supplement to their dry food. You will need a pressure cooker, some freezer space, and canning jars. Because my wife just gives them some in the ‘special” breakfast she makes for them I just use the 8 ounce jelly jars. I save up all chicken and turkey scraps, bones and all except for the grease. I put the scraps in a gallon freezer bag, and toss them in the freezer until I have two full bags. I put the scraps in the pressure cooker then fill it with water ¾ of the way full. Bring it up to ten pounds of pressure. If there is nothing but chicken scraps then I only cook it for one hour. If there are turkey bones in the mix it needs to be cooked for two hours because the turkey bones are more dense. Once the cooker is cooled down so I can take the lid off I drain off the broth, and save it to the side. The mash is then put in a stainless steel mixing bowl and mashed with a potato masher as best as I can get it done. Then the mix is run through the food processor. I then put the mash through a strainer to make sure there are no large bone chunks left, that everything has been cooked and blended real well. I get my canning jars and lids prepped and in the hot baths, heat the mash up on low making sure not to have the heat very high so it does not burn to the bottom of the pot. In the pot you can cook it down to the desired thickness. Typically after draining off the broth I find it does not take too much cooking for a good thick mix. After the jars are filled and lidded I place the jars in the pressure cooker, get it up to ten pounds of pressure again, and run it for 15 minutes. If I ever get around to visiting a couple of local cafes should they serve chicken I will see if they will set aside any bones for me and hopefully can get more dog food made up. If you do not have an overly finicky cat like we do it will work fine as cat food too. The first time I made this Chica, our cat, liked it just fine at first. I think when she realized she was sharing it with the dogs she decided to turn her nose up at it after that. So now I am saving up scavenger fish called squaw fish and when I have enough saved up I will make some cat food in the same fashion.
