Andy Rose update (on behalf of Cheryl Parry): Andys home! And while hes frustrated by what he feels is his slow progress, hes actually making an impressive recovery: Sentences are flowing much better and vocabulary/word recall is bouncing back -- itll take a few weeks for brain swelling to subside, but as it does, so should the complexity of his sentence structures, language recall, and grasp of concepts. (But, heck, he talked on the phone for what seemed to be nearly half an hour before he sorta wore himself out this evening :-) ). That said, hes not quite ready for company or even phone calls (I mustve got him at a relatively good moment) -- and, hey, recovering from brain surgery can be more exhausting than reporting on a city sewer bond planning commission meeting, yuh know. (...Well, uh, hmm...let me get back to you on that ...). Anyways, its no walk in the park -- but he IS walking and doing well enough that he might just go for a walk in the park soon (well, as soon as the rain lets up), and was doing SO well (relatively) that he didnt even qualify to be placed in an intensive rehab center (though theres some disagreement about that), On Monday, an assessment person or team will come out to the house to, uh, assess (yah, well, that seems logical, huh) his progress and project how much therapy hell need: physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive. Tentative plan is that after further recovery and therapy at home (timeline uncertain), hell be enrolled in outpatient therapy three times a week for three months. And then, world, watch out -- maybe hell bounce back so much hell want to run for office! (Oh, wait, that would mean the cognition therapy DIDNT work, huh...) ...... And speaking of politics and thus fundraising campaigns (...yes, you just read the worst segue in modern history...), a number of folks have asked how they can help Andy pay for all this therapy. Well, the temporary good news is that an arrangement has been made to get in-home care for about a week, maybe longer (just how long and for how many hours a day seem to be in dispute, possibly arising from some miscommunications and/or lack of organizational coordination, but those are being worked on); going forward, Medicare/disability should cover some of the costs, but Cheryl wont know exactly how much until next week, if then. As the dust settles and the picture of Andys needs becomes clearer (but lets hope he doesnt also remember too many cliches like those...!), Cheryl will be able to better ascertain what the financial impact will be, if any. At THAT point, you MIGHT be approached to POSSIBLY contribute to a fundraising campaign for therapy and home health services. (Well leave for another time WHY this all seems to have cropped up at the last minute, but if any of you journalists are interested in doing a care-coordination story, feel free to get in touch with me or Cheryl -- but please give Cheryl some space for now -- she still needs time to recover, coordinate care, and run her own business; Im exhausted just thinking about all that!) Both Andy and Cheryl thank you VERY much for all you continued kind words and support!
