Anecdotes of the Muttaqeen Shaykh al-Hind Mufti Mahmud al-Hasan (b.1851) was a muslim scholar who was a vociferous activist against British colonialism in India. For his efforts and scholarship he was given the title Shaykh al-Hind (Shaykh of India). Due to his activism against British rule, he was imprisoned in the island of Malta. Shaykh al-Hind had a student named Moulana Husain Ahmed Madani(b.1879) who was not personally convicted but instead volunteered to go to prison with his teacher so that he could look after the needs of his Ustadh(teacher). Whilst they were in prison the holy month of Ramadan came and neither Mehmud Hasan nor Husain Ahmed Madani were Hafiz of the Quran. At this instance, Mehmud Hasan said to his student (Madani) that in all of his life, he had not passed a Ramadan without listening to the complete Quran during the Tarawih Salaah. Hussain Ahmed Madani, who had great love for his Ustadh, took this very seriously and started to memorize the Holy Quran in the prison itself. Daily, Madani used to memorize one Juz of the Holy Quran and recite it in the Tarawih. Continuing doing so, he memorized the whole Quran in the 30 days of Ramadan, thus saving his teacher Mehmud Hasan from being deprived of listening to the Holy Quran during Ramadan. Husain Ahmed Madani was buried next to his teacher Shaykh al-Hind in Maqbar-e-Qasimi, the graveyard of Darul Uloom Deoband. (Via Orthodox Islam Page)
