Anger and agony on Telangana Indian government decision to go - TopicsExpress

Anger and agony on Telangana Indian government decision to go ahead with the creation of a new state, Telangana, which is to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh, has created contrasting demonstrations in the two parts of the state. While Telangana saw demonstrations supporting the move, the rest of the state is seeing massive protests against it. Four state ministers and dozens of legislators, including Congress Party members, have resigned from the state legislature over the move. If the protests become violent, it may backfire on the UPA move to create the 29th state in the Union of India. One major issue of contention is the future of the city of Hyderabad. As the city is within the Telangana region, it will be lost to the rest of Andhra Pradesh when the new state is formed. Critics argue that the move by the Congress led UPA was an electoral decision, rather than answering the long term demands of the Telangana movement. The UPA is set to do badly in the upcoming general election in 2014 and would like to see better prospects in the region if Telangana is created. However, some analysts argue that this move would set off a “Pandora’s Box” as other statehood movements will be encouraged to intensify their demands. There are a few strong statehood movements in India, such as in Gorkhaland in West Bengal, Vindya Pradesh in Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha in Maharashtra. Home to around 40 million people, Telangana region comprises of 10 of the 23 districts in Andhra Pradesh state. It is relatively poorer than the rest of the state. Proponents of Telangana argue that the relatively poorer, drought-prone northern region of Andhra Pradesh is being neglected by the politicians from the coastal areas of the state and argue that creation of the state will give more representation for the local people. It is also suggested that a smaller state will be easier to administer than a larger state such as Andhra Pradesh. - See more at: nation.lk/edition/international/item/19822-anger-and-agony-on-telangana.html#sthash.F7uN6XQI.dpuf
