Annex Chess Club, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Snow Squalls Swiss (1st tournament of 2015) My U 1900 Report on Rd. 1 (Jan. 5) 5 rounds (Jan. 5 – Feb. 2/15 - consecutive Mondays). Time control is Game/90 + 30 sec. increment from move 1. See the photo of the playing hall from the last tournament of 2014, below (by me). Tournament Format & Registration There are 40 players in three sections, all swisses: Crown (minimum 1800) – 15 players; 6 boards. U 1900 (1800’s have option to play up; my section) – 12 players; 10 boards. U 1500 (1400’s have the option to play up) – 13 players; 6 boards. You can inquire about joining the tournament at the general ACC e-mail address: info@annexchessclub . You can join a tournament in progress, and are given “byes” ( ½ pt.) for the rounds already missed. My U 1900 Section I am rated 1641. I am in the middle section: 1400 – 1799 (As I said, ACC allows playing up if within 100 points of the floor of the section above, so most 1800’s elect to play up. But so do most 1400’s play up. So effectively my section is a 400 point rating spread [1400 – 1799]). I am ranked 3rd out of 12. Tournaments for me, where I have to play down a lot, are really difficult….I seem generally to do much better when I play up! The rating distribution in my section is: 1800’s – 1 (decided not to exercise his option to play up in the Crown Section) 1700’s – 1 1600’s –4} 1500’’s – 4} these two groups (1600’s + 1500’s) mean that the section will be competitive. Many games with relatively equally rated players. 1400’s – 1 Unrated – 1 Rd. 1 Results: U 1900 (Officially 1500 to 1899) – 12 players Here are the standings: 1/ 5. 1 pt. (Won Rd.1) – Michael Sutton (1808); Junior Boy Tigran Ghazarian (1600); Daniele Piri (1525); Kamran Amirirad (1463); Marc Flores (unrated). 6/ 7. ½ pts. - Heimo C. Haikala (1788); Jack Maguire (1590). 8/ 12. 0 pts. -– Bob Armstrong (me – 1641); Junior Boy Nicholas Wu (1632); Ulli Diemer (1603); Hooshang Ab-barin (1602); Mark A. Patton (1578). 19. – 0 pts. -– withdrew after Rd. 2). My Round 1 Game Last night, Mon., Jan. 5, in Rd. 1, I (photo by Egis Zeromskis below, bottom right) played on board 2 (out of 5 boards). I (Rated 1641) lost to Daniele Pirri (Rated 1525) – see photo below, bottom left). I took the initiative out of the opening, and developed a K-side attack as Black, out of a Pirc. But Daniele just defended and defended, and it got to a kind of stand-off. It was at that point complicated (at least for me). I thought I saw a good exchange sac, where I’d then attack, get the exchange back, and win a minor in the process. I was not able to clearly calculate all of it, but it seemed worthwhile to try it. Two moves in, I saw what I had miscalculated – one of my pieces had been exchanged and I had thought it was still there (sigh). I fought on for some tactical opportunity to still win or draw, but Daniele gave me nothing, and he won. So I start with 0/1 pts. The game will be annotated by me with my own Comprehensive Annotation System (CAS), using Fritz, and posted on Chess5 (chess5) in the next few weeks. My Prior Games Most of my prior games from tournaments in 2014 at Scarborough CC, at Annex CC games, and weekend tournaments, are fully annotated and available on Chess5 already, in the public database. There are a few (too many) losses…. …. but many say I lose interesting games; as well, the annotations are often instructive as to what should have been played.
