Annie Jump Cannon, astronomer, devised the classification system we use for stars. Working at Harvard (for 50 cents an hour!) early in her career, she classified more than 225,000, and later cataloged several hundred thousand stars to the 11th magnitude. She discovered 300 variable stars, and five novae, a class of exploding stars. And Id never heard of her - despite taking astronomy in college - so, thank you, Google, for the doodle today.
