Announcement: November 9, 2013 Dr. Philip de Barros (Stanford, UCLA), Professor of Anthropology and Coordinator of the Archaeology Program will be doing a guest lecture on... ANCIENT AFRICAN IRONWORKING: The Bassar Iron Industry of Togo, West Africa. The author has been conducting archaeological research about the Bassar iron industry for the last 32 years. This talk will summarize his past discoveries regarding the Late Stone Age/Early Iron Age occupation from 1300 B.C. to 150 A.D. and the Later Iron Age with its tall, natural draft (without bellows) furnaces from the 13th through 20th centuries. Bassar ironworking was still a viable activity until the 1950s. Particular emphasis will be placed on the 2013 field season financed by a Fulbright Grant. Four Palomar students accompanied Dr. de Barros to Togo and a major discovery of the remains of a 2000-2400 yr old iron smelting furnace will be presented for the first time to the public in his Power Point presentation.
