Another Crime Prevention Tip: Check your screws! Most builders use short screws to anchor the strike plates onto the door jamb. These screws are not long enough to engage the 2x4 stud in the wall (see diagram). This makes it very easy to kick or pry your door because only the door trim/jamb needs to break for a burglar to make entry. This applies to front, back and side doors! We recommend replacing those screws with 3 1/2 Wood screws that anchor into the stud. (check your hinge screws also). Remember, your entrance is only as strong as the weakest link. If you do not have a solid-core door, you may want to reinforce it with a door wrap. This will help to prevent the door from splitting. If the strike plate is anchored into the stud, but you have a hollow or foam/cardboard filled door, the door will fail first. You may even consider upgrading to a solid door. There are many great products that can further reinforce exterior doors. Do your research and choose whats best for you. Like and share! Our next tip will deal with back-doors that have glass in or near the door!
