Another Zap Stroke of Genius™ Not so much a great idea, as a lightbulb moment. I finally realized that a grid-tied PV (solar power) system is actually MORE efficient than an off-grid system. I dont mean just in the fact that it costs less, and uses less materials, but giving power back to the grid when peak power usage for the city is at its highest means the power company uses less coal to run their generators. When they can more accurately predict how much power they will use, they can produce less waste-electricity that no one used when it was made (you cant un-burn the coal !). You are actually being greener by keeping your solar tied to the grid, than to be off-grid and self-sufficient.
