Another call for NEA performer entries Enter now for the National Eisteddfod Academys 2014 Young Performer Awards. The National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA), a non-profit organisation for youth development in music, dance, drama and visual arts, is calling for entries for the 2014 NEA Young Performer Awards competition. Up for grabs at this annual Awards competition is prize money in excess of R50 000. The award-winning internet-based wire service for South African arts, culture and entertainment news and reviews, Artslink.co.za, will for the third time sponsor an amount of R10 000 towards the award for the Gold medallist in all genres. The 11th annual NEA Young Performer Awards competition will be presented at the Atterbury Theatre, Pretoria on 17 May. At last year’s Awards the NEA introduced special gold, silver and bronze medals that went to the top three performers in this competition: the 2012 winner André Breet (a grade 12 pianist from the West Rand), once again, emerged victorious and received the gold medal and R22 000 in cash, while the Silver Medal and R5 000 went to Megan Pistorius (senior winner in Speech and Drama), and the Bronze Medal and R4 000 was awarded to Kathleen Videira (senior Dance winner). The competition provides a platform where the best, young performers in music, dance and drama, as identified at various festivals and competitions, can compete and showcase their talents. Amateur performers that have received 90% or more in an eisteddfod or similar competition during 2013 are eligible to enter the 2014 NEA Young Performer Awards competition. Organisers of other eisteddfods and festivals may also nominate and enter their top achievers for participation in the NEA Young Performer Awards. There are four rounds of adjudication: the first three rounds will take place at the Roodepoort Theatre, starting with the first round from 24 February to 20 March and concluding with the final round on 17 May at the Atterbury Theatre, Pretoria. The Semi-Final Round from 5 to 8 May will also be presented as four evening concerts at the Roodepoort Theatre, each one dedicated to a different genre (i.e. Classical Music, Contemporary Music, Dance and Drama). The Roodepoort Theatre has kindly part-sponsored the use of both its venues for a month. Previous adjudicators of this prestigious event include well-known names like Mimi Coertse, Ismail Mahomed, Sibongile Mngoma, Gladys Agulhas, Gloria Bosman, Heinz Winkler, Neil Sandilands, Relebogile Mabotja, Henry Mylne, Bianca le Grange, Vinette Ebrahim, David April, Fiona Budd, Iain MacDonald, Roderick Jaftha, Diane Coutts, Jan Engelen, Paul du Toit, June Kraus, Annake de Villiers, Jolette Odendaal, Renata Stuurman, Tiro Moshosho and Colin Campbell. The National Eisteddfod Academy initially launched this competition in 2004 to provide a next level of participation for young performers in the various regions. Since 2006 top achievers in any existing eisteddfods and festivals in South Africa have been eligible for entry to this competition. Many past winners and participants have already excelled on other platforms. Notable names include Andile Ndlovu and Camille Bracher (both top achievers in ballet, in South Africa and internationally), and Julian Hepburn (finalist in “SA’s got talent”), Carmen Pretorius (leading roles in Mamma Mia and Cinderella), Iman Bulbulia (Most Promising Candidate at the Sanlam National Music Competition) and others. At the 2013 final round Ismail Mahomed commented, “All five judges scored independently and yet we unanimously arrived at the same decisions. I feel ecstatic when the arts go beyond tokenism because then it is giving recognition to our real achievers and champions. If the NEA Award winners represent the next generation of artists, I am filled with great hope for the creative industries”.
