CRIME REPORT Alleged Reckless and Negligent Driving Alleged Use of Motor Vehicle Without Owner’s Consent PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL REPORT, BUT PURELY OBSERVATIONS BY MEMBERS OF THE VOLUNTEER GROUP. At 14h00 today we received a report from one of our members that his wife had witnessed what she thought was a possible Hijacking and that it was still in progress. The incident took place on Old Main Road right outside the Sasol filling station of the M13 We mobilised seven volunteer vehicles and were on the scene within two minutes. On our arrival there were already two Metro and two SAPS vehicles at the scene, well done for getting there so quickly to both of you. Many other SAPS and Metro vehicles including RTI and SAPS Dog Squad were also on the scene within the next few minutes. On our arrival they had arrested two suspects and were questioning a third who was also later arrested. The suspects were then all taken to the police station where they will be detained for further questioning. Pieces of the puzzle started coming together and it was apparent that a Metro Police vehicle has spotted the car on the M13 highway and that the occupants were acting in a suspicious way and a car chase ensued. They were travelling Durban bound. The suspects took the Dawncliffe Road off ramp and failed to stop at the stop street at the top of the off ramp where they collided with another vehicle. The other vehicle’s driver had to be taken to hospital by ambulance, but she did not seem to have suffered any life threatening injuries. The unofficial report seems that the suspects were driving a rental vehicle which one of their friend’s had rented. At this stage it seems as they will be charged with Reckless and Negligent Driving and Use of Motor Vehicle without Owner’s consent. There was a concern that one of the suspects may have thrown a firearm into the bushes and SAPS Dog Unit was conducting a thorough search. We are confident that SAPS will perform the necessary checks on the suspects including fingerprints to determine whether they can be linked to any other crimes. The suspects were three black males all in their early twenties, it was noted that the one suspect was wearing a Life Guard Uniform. We would like to congratulate Metro Police and SAPS for their great policing and incredibly quick reaction time regarding this incident. Well done to all involved
