Another deadly weekend here in Savannah. Multiple shootings. Another child 13 years old shot and little to no cooperation with witnesses. This cultural crime problem that is plaguing this community has reached levels unheard of with no signs of relief in sight. The facts cannot be ignored of where the problem is. In my opinion, and I stand by it, this is now the price we are paying for not having an effective drug squad in place and working these lower level drug dealers off he streets. For years, the city and the county played political games with CNT and effectively opened the streets for lower level dealing to go basically unattended. Everyone focused on who was going to be in control of CNT while the henhouses were getting sacked. While CNT is to be admired for their successes, they are not the complete piece of the puzzle for an effective drug enforcement strategy in this city. Combine those problems with the recent revelations in the PD that I wrote about a few days ago and frankly anyone can see that the challenge we have ahead is one of the greatest this city has ever reached. AND, until more elected officials, demand like I have, that we implement an aggressive drug fighting strategy at the street level, these shootings and killings will continue to be daily news that will further erode the quality of life in Savannah and this entire region. This is not a city issue alone. This problem affects this entire region and could potentially destabilize the entire tri-county area if we do not implement a plan of action with all the partners immediately. One other point, no matter how many marches the good folks make; press conferences that will be held; any amounts of candles that are burned; or prayers the preachers are sending up, as long as the people and witnesses arent sharing information with law enforcement, very little will happen in getting control of this epidemic and crisis in Savannah.
