Another exciting lineup announcement for THE BIG BASEMENT SHOW, presented by The Almighty Rhombus, in association with NLFB: Marine Dreams as well as locals Strange Attractor. MORE INFO: https://facebook/events/1427246190826879/ Strange Attractor (https://facebook/strangeattractor) People often view Sudbury as a dismal and despondent city. With a population of only 160,000 people, it is not often viewed as a place where great punk bands (or any bands for that matter) materialize. I see it differently and have witnessed a handful of half-decent bands emerge from the city over the past ten years…I have also seen most of those bands disassemble and either move out of Sudbury or get real jobs. Out of all the punk bands that have come and gone, Strange Attractor as of late has been sitting at the top, alone and companionless. On the Strange Attractor records, Strange Attractor, Mutant Love, and the newly released Back to the Cruel World I could hear a lot of Sudbury in the lyrics (“Nothing to do is nothing new”—a major complaint among Sudbury residents). Much of the frustration and complacency Jeff Houle expresses in his songs, I also feel living in this city. Those records don’t only speak to people in Sudbury though; they speak to mid-sized cities across the country and small communities within those cities. Being in a city that feels stuck, that socially and politically doesn’t evoke change, is often a universal circumstance that anyone can relate to. -Written by Neil Bednis Marine Dreams (https://facebook/pages/Marine-Dreams/281814055170520) From my estimation, Ian Kehoe is a learned man of 20th century literature solely based on his exceptional lyrical output for both Attack in Black and his current project, Marine Dreams (as well as his proclamation of inspiration from Miller, Bukowski, etc). Much like the writers that inspire him, he is an overlooked artist who consistently puts out a memorable body of work that when broken down speaks to the true core of not only human emotion but humanity conceptualized. On his newest effort Corner of the Eye, Kehoe shows the music world that he is an outstanding songwriter. Not only has he perfected his craft with regard to melody and lyrics, he possesses the characteristics and skill of a true artistic visionary (sometimes beyond his means of expression) much like that of Westerberg on his record Mono/Stereo or Spence on his magnum opus, Oar. To some, Corner of the Eye will just be another rock record with some strong melodies and satisfying words but to others it’s the embodiment of what it means to be a songwriter. -Written by Neil Bednis
