Another great memory is jumping over Sicily drop zone, Ft. Bragg NC, I probably made clos to 50 jumps on that DZ. It is named after the WW II jump into Sicily done by the 82nd Airborne Division over 2 nights, the first during the initial assault and the other to reinforce the units that had suffered serious casualties on the first day, of those men from the 504th Abn., Infantry 82nd Abn. Dic. Unfortunately the pilot of the aircraft with paratroops and towing gliders were a little off course, they flew over the the US. fleet which had just been bombed by German aircraft, and they opened fire. Several aircraft and gliders were shot down before they reached the coast and over 200 personnel were lost out of a unit with about 700). What an honor to have served in that unit and with airborne men and women over ten years of my Army career.
