Another reader question: Standard Draft, I pick 9th. Should I pick - TopicsExpress

Another reader question: Standard Draft, I pick 9th. Should I pick up a top quarterback, or go with a WR/RB? No way any top rb or Calvin is still around. Paras: I always prefer to start with a RB if possible, and WR (or TE if its Jimmy Graham) is my second priority. I like to wait until the later rounds for a QB unless there is a significant drop-off in the RB/WR pool at your draft spot. By the 9th pick, Im assuming (unless someone foolishly took a QB too early) that McCoy, Charles, Peterson, Forte, Lacy, Calvin, Jimmy Graham, Lynch will be gone (if one of my top 8 are available, I would take him). Given your position, youll probably be deciding between AJ Green, DeMaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, and Brandon Marshall--all these guys are very very similar and I would pick your favorite out of these guys. Any of them should give you 1200-1400 yds and 10-12 tds. I think DeMarco Murray and Montee Ball are a dropoff from the aforementioned receivers, so I would not take them as high as 9 even though its nice to secure a good RB. As for QBs, obviously Peyton Manning is the main consideration here, but I still think its too early with so many elite WRs to choose from here. Mohin: I agree with my man Paras for the most part, with the exception of Lynch. I think at #9, you may find that someone has taken Peyton and Rodgers as well. One thing to mention is that how many teams are in your league may influence draft strategy as well. If youre in a 10 team league, youll be picking again in 2 picks, so you can see whos available and perhaps try to play the odds a bit--so if the top quarterbacks are around, grab one of them and then take a top WR or RB next. If youre in a deeper league (12+), then I stick with the strategy as Paras outlined at least in round 1. I think that as far as quarterbacks, only Manning, Brees, and Rodgers are worth a 1st round pick, and even then, Id be hesitant slightly on Rodgers.
