Another remarkable day at Newcastle University. A very moving lunchtime recital for Remembrance Week with the bass-baritone Christopher Foster and the pianist Audrey Hyland performing A Soldiers Tale, a sequence of songs by British, French and German composers which form the life story of an imaginary soldier, and interspersed with soldiers songs from the Great War. Then, this evening, a remarkable lecture in the Insights public lecture series by Sir Jeremy Greenstock, British Ambassador to the UN from 1998-2003 and currently Chair of the UK-UN Association on the topic of the UN and the UK in a changing world. Some of what Sir Jeremy said has really moved my thinking on and, once Ive let his thoughts digest, Ill post some comments here. Unfortunately, Christopher and Audrey havent anything from A Soldiers Tale online so my goodnight tune is a performance by Roderick Williams of one of the songs they featured - a setting of Housmans poem The Lads In Their Hundreds by the folklorist and composer George Butterworth who himself met his death on the Western Front. Goodnight. https://youtube/watch?v=b4kPNyQc5Ro
